The verbiage just reminded me too much of a Rastafarian. It requires too much thinking, too much brain power to try to translate what is being said to what is meant. It does have some interesting points of discussions but it just wasn't for me.

If you would like to challenge yourself and dig deep within your mental powers to try to decipher the deeper truths into this book then go ahead and have a read. If you can ignore the culture behind how things are being said, then you probably can appreciate this book. For me a statement like "Our thoughts and emotions are our functions of how we conclude and make privilege discernment." just doesn't move me to want to read on. There are so many simple, clear ways to express oneself but the author chooses the weirdest, most complicated way.

This is not for the common people. To me, it's written by and for someone who is one a 'high' or who has done way too much philosophy classes. I am sure it has its audience tho.

John Shelton Jones, in his book, Awakening Kings and Princes Volume I, gives a practical guide from a male perspective talking directly to young men. The premise of the book is that every male has royalty inside. The concept of royalty is that regal character that values education, righteousness, strength, and responsibility. The idea is that if men would only embrace this royal quality within themselves, then they could lead and take their rightful place in society. The book pin points the societal ills that plague our communities as men, young and old have lost their way and often leave their posts unattended and the burden then falls on women. This book speaks from the belief that men should take the lead because that is the God given order of society, and if a man does so with compassion and wisdom that man can then heal many of the problems that we face as a society.
The book is divided into four sections that each address a specific part of the male psyche. This book is well researched and educates the reader by discovering the truths of the Bible as well as secular world. Jones does an amazing job of substantiating his ideals with the Word of God, as well as solidifying his theories using research. This book also pulls from the best of mankind to quote, Winston Churchill, Tupac Shakur, and Martin Luther King, Jr. to name a few. This book is full of information that is relevant to those who can receive it.
This book is reminiscent to a Black Hebrew ideology which I do not personally prescribe to, however this book serves as an excellent reference to the religion and the belief structure. I’d recommend anyone read for better understanding because there is much truth to be acquired from it. In other words, those with an interest can eat the meat and spit the bones if they are not foundationally in line with their belief system. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful collection of ideas that are based in Scripture.
I would recommend this book for young men and fathers, especially African American. Those that want empowerment and to really understand who they are and where they are from. This book, touches on every possible aspect of the male life, with topics such as sensuality and sexuality, gang violence, spirituality, family, self-esteem, and many more. The reader will begin to question what has already been taught as this book illuminates areas that are flawed in conventional wisdom. Theories and thoughts concerning the nationality of Yeshua, open the eyes to those who have believed in a blond-hair, blue-eyed Jesus. This book, while some may not believe every aspect, will challenge popular knowledge.
My favorite part of the book was the chapter on Masterful loving and traits. The chapter explains the various types of love, pragmatic, storge, agapic, eros, ardent, etc. I believe that love of oneself, others, and God is the foundation to all good things. This book gives the reader tangible evidences for each type of love and helps them evaluate themselves and their partners. This book teaches men how to be good lovers to their women. Most books will not give directions and instructions in a way that is not vile. This book addresses the beauty of love and love-making. It instructs men on the way to please their women in a manner that is wholesome and true. This is something that this book offers that I have never seen offered in any book of its genre. Other books that use spirituality, will never address sexuality in the way that this book has. I truly appreciate the author for his willingness to express these things in such a poetic manner. I fully expect that this book will be featured on someone’s best seller. I recommend that it is discussed amongst men of all different ages. It should be a guide to discussion as the older generation teach the younger generation how to truly embrace their royalty. This book, if used properly, will unlock the innate self of the reader and create change that is worthwhile and vital.
First, let me say that this book is full of information. The type of knowledge that everyone can gain. The title says Kings and Princes, but he acknowledges Queens and Princesses as well.

After the first chapter or so, I was enthralled. This is a book I will share with my husband. You can tell that John took his time to write this and make sure that he included all the tools you would need to open your mind and receive your blessings. It was an easy read for me, and it was even easier with John using movie and show examples for what he was trying to convey.

I know a few people won't agree with some of the knowledge he drops, but I truly believe despite that, this book can be useful and might even change some minds! I didn't agree with everything that was written, but I took what I did agree with and will apply it to my life.

I learned a lot about intimacy, love, sensuality...things I'm normally uneasy discussing, but this book has made me grasp the true concept of being intimate and in tune with my lover and my body.

John says, "It's more important to remain true than live a path of lies and falsify your identity." This is something everyone should read and grasp. I took notes because there was a lot of valuable information that I can study and keep with me in my day to day life. I am truly grateful for this book, as I am on my spiritual journey trying to find myself and who I really am.

All men need a strong male role model to show them how to behave in society and what is expected of them. They will not be a useful member of society if they remain unfulfilled – hence the idea of awakening kings. I do agree with this. Unfortunately, although the message may be on track, I found the language and syntax extremely difficult to follow; it seems really convoluted at times. There are a number of biblical references and the author has knowledge of both the bible and other gnostic texts. He is not afraid to tackle sexual practices of all kinds including those relating to homosexuality.
